Five Minute Friday: MIGHTY

MIGHTY

his weeks’ word is not in my everyday speech very often. But a part of the word is in my language – and I imagine as well with my readers.  

I might not be able to make it through this.
I might not be good enough.
My baby might be getting sick.
I might get in an accident
My baby might not be gaining enough weight.
He might leave me.
She might not be my friend.
I might fail.
I might get cancer.
I might not be a good mom.  

When we get these things going in our minds of what might happen, we need remember first, 

Finally, brothers and sisters,
whatever is true,
whatever is noble,
whatever is right,
whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely,
whatever is admirable—
if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—
think about such things

(Note how the word might is never used in this verse!)

So what do we do with the “mights” in our lives?  We can turn to our Mighty God, who is mighty in power, who knows all and loves us beyond measure and wants the best for us and our loved ones  the Mighty One who does not have might as part of His vocabulary — who has been faithful generation after generation and we can repeat His mighty acts and things He has done for us from generations behind us to generations before us.  

Might we get might out of our vocabulary and trust this Mighty Rock, because of His great power and mighty strength?

Psalm 62:7

Who is like you, Lord God Almighty?
    You, Lord, are mighty, and your faithfulness surrounds you.
Psalm 89:8

The Lord’s right hand is lifted high;
    the Lord’s right hand has done mighty things!”
Psalm 118:16

Great is our Lord and mighty in power; His understanding has no limit.
Psalm 147:5

One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.
Psalm 145:4

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:
    Who created all these?
He who brings out the starry host one by one
    and calls forth each of them by name.
Because of His great power and mighty strength,
    not one of them is missing.
Isaiah 40:26

For to us a Child is born,
    to us a Son is given,
    and the government will be on His shoulders.
And He will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6

  1. I am amused and impressed with the contrast of the words “might” and “mighty.” Thank you for sharing your great article.

  2. It does seem like the word “might” often carries a negative tone or a let down of some sort. Perhaps I should rid this word from my vocabulary and see what “will.”
