T

hrough our years of homeschooling, it has seemed that we can always find wonderful wholesome books for girls, and while there are great ones for boys as well,  they are very few.  I am delighted to share with my readers, The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell: Father of Scouting by my son’s future grandma-in-law, Eleanor Clark who will be on Fox & Friends TV show Tuesday morning!  Yes, this book review may be slightly sweetened because of this, but truly, I enjoyed this book and look forward to having not only my boys read it, but my girls as well.

The story is of young man, John, who is attending Boy Scout Camp who is given an assignment by his grandmother, the author, Eleanor Clark, whom he (and her real-life grandchildren) call “Grand Doll”.  John is to do research during his week at camp about Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of Boy Scouts and also a distant relative.  Grand Doll wants to understand more what made Lord Baden-Powell do what he did in founding the Boy Scouts and what made him tick.   Throughout the week, John and several other scouts do research, document and put together videos to show Mrs. Clark.  She is due to arrive at the camp at the end of the week to give a speech.

I appreciated the way The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell is not just telling facts, but told in a fascinating, captivating way as the boys discovered new things daily. It is a very real-life story of our heritage.  For instance, the Scoutmaster helped find old documents and papers for them and pointed out to the boys,

“. . . the first thing you can’t help but notice are the words ‘God and country’ over and over every document, running through every thread of the material on Scouting.  This was very important to him.  It’s clear he felt young men, actually all men for that matter, should be basing their lives on the bedrock of faith and patriotism.”

This book has two purposes, not only to share about Lord Baden-Powell, but it is also the author’s goal to reach one million new scout members, teaching them about patriotism, values, and love for God and our country.  And, just by reading The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell: Father of Scouting, answering the review questions in the back of the book, and recruiting a new scout member, scouts can earn an activity badge.

I am honored to highly recommend this book as a family book to read, to encourage young men to join the scouts, and as a great addition to a homeschool curriculum.  Mrs. Clark is allowing me to pass on a free lapbook she has also written to the first two people who tell me they have purchased The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell: Father of Scouting (you will have to provide me with what is specifically on a page of the book for proof of purchase) and I will e-mail you a lapbook, especially for grades 2-7. Just leave a comment below and I will respond back to you privately.

Mrs. Clark has also written a series for girls, The Eleanor Series, which I will be reviewing in the near future, including the one on my future daughter-in-law, Melanie Ann: A Legacy of Love (The Eleanor Series, Book 6).

A complimentary copy of The Legacy of Lord Baden-Powell was provided by the author, Eleanor Clark in exchange for my honest opinion of it.  🙂
