Hows to Choose the perfect Bathroom Lighting

W

hen you choose bathroom lighting, you will want your investment to reflect your choices in interior design and to pay off with a pleasant and comfortable ambiance. You will have to make important choices that revolve around existing light fixtures in your bathroom, and this can be difficult for someone without a background in design or an awareness of how lighting functions indoors can change the style and decor of a place.

If You Prefer a Casual and Relaxing Lighting Style:

The colour blue has been statistically proven to increase mood and encourage relaxation. Blue always helps visitors feel more at peace and allows them to kick back and enjoy themselves, no matter where in your home they are. Blue lights at a medium or low intensity can always lend a little beauty to an otherwise unremarkable bathroom. However, make sure you keep a particularly bright fixture above or near the bathroom mirror. This goes for all light styles, and casual lighting is no exception. Casual or soft lighting is best accentuated by dark colours on your bathroom walls. This prevents the light from bouncing too much and keeps the “tone” of the room muted, quiet and reserved. Try to avoid reddish colours or colours that clash.

If you Want to Appear Modern, Post-Modern or Avant-Garde

Stainless steel is your friend in this regard. Keeping your bathroom ultra-modern and broadcasting a classy, hip feel requires a good amount of stainless steel fixtures, arranged minimally and tastefully. These fixtures must be integrated with the existing colour of the bathroom to make sure they mesh perfectly with the decor. Avoid using high intensity light settings or levels, as this will “overload” visitors and become annoying rather than smooth and subtle. You want your style to catch someone’s interest, not slap them in the face. As for lighting colour, go for a typical yellow or white hue in the bulbs and screens you choose. You will have already made plentiful statements with your bathroom’s style, so you can afford to keep it simple with bulb choice and fixture accessories. Again, this style only works if the bathroom already reflects a sleek modern or post-modern look. Doilies and fluffy toilet seat covers will run the effect, so avoid things like these. The same goes for kitschy decorations and “nature” themed objects like wicker lamp covers and brightly coloured towels. Keep everything minimal, and the lights will do their work just fine. To get the full “look” consider investing in a granite or marble countertop for your bathroom sink.

If You Have a Small or Limited Bathroom Space

Using limited space is a difficult task for any interior designer, especially if your bathroom has little room for light fixtures. Fortunately, a small bathroom corresponds perfectly with a small bathroom lighting budget! Redecorating and setting up new lighting will always be cheaper the smaller the space. That said, remember not to overuse light fixtures or shades, as these can crowd the room. Keep lights bright or place dimmer switches at easy access locations–this will help the bathroom seem more open and welcoming. Bright, steady lighting can even make the room look larger in a trick of the eye. To accentuate this, considering purchasing additional mirrors to give the room depth. These will also refract light to give you some more illumination.

Guest Post: Term Life Insurance for Smokers – What’s Available?

I

t’s common knowledge that those of us who smoke have a shorter life expectancy  than those of us who choose not to. As such, term life insurance for smokers is going to be a lot more costly than it is for non-smokers.

Along with shorter life expectancy comes a higher risk that an insurance company will have to pay out on a life insurance policy. Higher risks for the company will in turn mean higher premiums to be paid by the customer in order to reduce the overall financial risk for the insurance company.

Nevertheless, even with the increased expense, purchasing a term life insurance plan as a smoker is still a sensible option.

With the death of a family member comes the potential for – not only grief and mourning, but also impending financial challenges which were not there previously. There may be a loss to the main income source which the family were fully dependent upon. Thus the question has to be asked – how are the monthly bills to be paid?

But it’s not only about monthly bills. There are also funeral expenses, taxes which may have to be settled, as well as probate, and any other financial matters which can and often do crop up. Having a life insurance plan in place will inevitably help to reduce a number of the potential future financial burdens on a family, should the main income earner of the household pass away prematurely.

Reducing the Cost of Insurance

Although it’s common knowledge that if we were to stop smoking then the cost of life insurance will drop dramatically. Smoking brings with it higher risks, and as such it’s much more difficult to obtain an attractive coverage policy rate.

Nevertheless, if quitting smoking is not an option for the time being at least, then there is another way to find life insurance coverage at a more affordable price.

What’s the secret?

Simply taking the time to do more research!

Along with the internet comes a vastly heightened ability to find very attractive insurance coverage rates for many of life’s potential scenarios, and that includes for smokers too. Although it may seem that carrying out this sort of research will be greatly time consuming, that is no longer the case. Surfing the internet makes this whole process much easier than it was previously.

Literally, there are hundreds to thousands of insurance companies strongly contesting with one another for business. What this means is that prices are competitive. After all, it is often the case that the company with the lowest price wins the business.

The internet makes the process of comparing one company’s prices to another’s very easy and very speedy. There are many websites such as:

 www.americangeneral.com and www.harrislifeinsurance.com

which allow us to fill out a short form with some basic information. Then, at the click of a button, almost instantaneously we are provided with quotes pertaining to our needs. Finding the best alternative at a lower price can in fact save us hundreds of dollars every single year and it generally takes less than an hour to do so.

How to Train a Puppy While Keeping Your Sanity Intact

I owned “Puppy Halfway House” – a different type of pet shop that took in puppies and found homes for them for close to 15 years.  We often had to give new dog owners advice in how to train their dog.  Here is a great guest post for those needing to know how to train their puppy.

I

t is no secret that adopting a puppy is similar to adopting an adorable little handful.  Puppies can cause ample stress until they grow up and settle down.  It is best to train your new puppy how to behave from day one.  Puppies are best trained when owners are highly attentive, consistent, and patient.  Trying to teach a puppy the basics of being a dog can be frustrating.  It is important to invest in the right training tools in order to keep your sanity and train your puppy to be a great dog.  Get through the puppy time, and enjoy the company of the perfect dog for the next decade.

Keep Your Escape Artist in the Yard

The first item of business is to puppy-proof your house and yard to the best of your abilities.  Almost nothing is worse than the sinking feeling you can get in the event your puppy wriggles under the fence and starts to roam the neighborhood at large.  Similarly, few things are as stressful as running through the neighborhood in order to get your puppy back to his home.  Some neighbors might not appreciate frequent hot pursuits through their backyards.  Invest in a quality electronic dog fence to keep your puppy from making daring escapes.  Also, keep your puppy safe from being hit by a car or taken by a stranger.

House Training is Essential

Almost no one likes cleaning up multiple puppy accidents every day.  Train your dog to go potty outside as soon as possible.  Some dogs can get the concept in as little as a few days, but other dogs can take a few weeks to understand the difference between inside and outside.  One major setback many puppies face is figuring out what to do when you are not home or asleep.  Try to crate train your puppy for the first few weeks, and have your puppy on a leash near you when you are home.  Recognize the warning signs, and give your puppy ample praise when he gets it right.

Training Not to Bark, Chew, and Engage in Other Bad Behaviors

Electronic training collars are great training tools for different varieties of dogs.  It is important to show your dog the connection between the vibration of the training collar and a reminder not to bark or engage in other bad behaviors.  It is also important to praise your dog when he is calm and doing what he should.  Give your dog attention and a treat when he demonstrates good behavior to show him what he should be doing all of the time.  Training your dog not to chew inedible items is also important for his safety.  Inedible items can poison your puppy or block his digestive tract.

Ongoing Training

Puppies get bored easily.  Take your puppy on daily walks instead of leaving him alone in the yard.  Give yourself a chance to bond with your puppy, and give him a chance to learn how to be a good dog.  The best dogs love their families, have ample time to socialize, and get a good amount of exercise.  Teach your puppy how to grow up to be a great dog from day one.

(I am a new grandma and cannot see enough pictures of my granddaughter!
What a blessing that her mama is also a great photographer!
Here are some great photo ideas for other new grandmas and mamas!)

Blog1B

abies are adorable to capture in photos. The first few months of their lives are incredible and parents want to remember these moments the best way possible. Here are five of the cutest ways to capture your baby in pictures.

Use a mirror Babies love mirrors! It is incredible to watch a baby look at themselves in a mirror for the first time. Mirror photography can capture a baby’s sense of wonder, their interactions with the mirror, or even see them touching or trying to kiss the mirror. Mirrors are like magic to babies which make very cute photos!

Baby sitting in a chair
Photograph your baby a newborn in a big soft chair. Then every month after that, take the same picture of that baby in that same chair. This will show how much the baby grows every month. The size of the baby will increase while the chair stays the same. Have the baby wear onesies with a number on it that shows how many months they are. This is an adorable way to capture how your baby grows over time.

Baby sitting in a hat or glove
One of the cutest ways to photograph a newborn is by placing them in their Daddy’s military helmet or baseball hat or even check out this super cute baby in a baseball glove. It can be a cowboy hat or any type of hat will do. If the parents are die-hard baseball fans, a great photo would be placing the newborn inside a baseball glove. Baseball fans would love this photo and it helps reveal the true size of the baby.

Using babies to form word art
This is best done when the baby is asleep so you are able to position their feet a certain way in which it will stay. Take the baby’s feet to form a “V” shape and put cut out letters surrounding the feet to make the word “love”. Have the baby lay in something fluffy to create a soft, beautiful photo of the baby looking as if they are spelling the word “love”. This is an adorable picture that many parents love to have for keepsakes.

Get that baby naked!
Naked babies are absolutely adorable! You can take any picture of a naked baby and it will look super cute! So get that baby naked and have them curl up in a sleeping position or just hanging out and it will be a keeper for sure! Some great ideas are having them wear cowboy boots and a hat and nothing else. You could also have the naked baby sitting in a hat, chair, or wrapped in a favorite blanket or shirt of one of the parent’s.

These are just a few adorable baby photography ideas. There are so many more photo ideas to choose from to do with a baby. Talk with your photographer and they may even have some more ideas for you and your baby to choose from to capture this precious time in your baby’s life.

GUEST ARTICLE: Freshman Guide: What to Look Forward to in FAMU

C

hoosing a school to attend college in, is perhaps one of those life-changing decisions that a person makes in his lifetime. The university you enlist in plays a pretty major role in how your career will pan out eventually. As such, this decision-making process should be taken with serious consideration.

One of the top choices for American high school graduates who aspire to become professionals in the fields of agriculture and engineering is Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) located in the city of Tallahassee. It offers a total of sixty-two bachelor’s degree programs and is perched on a hill that covers an area of 422 acres.

Incoming freshmen of any program in FAMU have a lot to look forward to as they enter the threshold of college life. Here are some of the things that any freshman can expect in this prestigious Floridian university:

The weather

Since Florida is known as the Sunshine State, its inhabitants enjoy a sunny weather roughly 360 days a year, with barely any snowfall during winter. If it’s your first time in this part of America, be sure to pack less of those thick coats and more of light, cotton clothing.

Cultural and ethnic backgrounds

While FAMU was known to be an academic institution for African-American enrollees, nowadays its general student makeup is composed of different ethnicities and nationalities.

Campus neighborhood

One of the best things about this university in Tallahassee is that it is located in a very student-friendly community where restaurants serving quick to-go meals and intimate dinner places can be found. Moreover, there is quite a huge number of apartments near FAMU and there is even a village that is highly concentrated with college students — making it a favorable and convenient dining hub for FAMU students.

Student population

Every year, roughly 12,000 students are enrolled in FAMU. These enrollees come from different parts of the United States as well as other countries like China, Bahamas, Netherlands, Brazil, Egypt, and Trinidad. The most popular undergraduate courses include the following: psychology, journalism, architecture, and computer information sciences.

Freshmen orientation

If it’s your first year in college, the FAMU will be providing campus tours and freshmen orientation classes. Make sure that you don’t miss any of these as your participation will definitely expedite your mastery of the campus’s every nook and cranny. Moreover, there are also orientation sessions for parents which generally take place for two and a half days. It’s also important to take note of the registration fees required for these orientation trips.

Aside from the things previously mentioned, there’s still so much more to look forward to during your first year in FAMU. The first year away from the comfort of home can be challenging — with homesickness a constant and the whole adjustment process not easy to deal with. However, it’s not a totally hopeless cause; with an open mind and a positive outlook on life, being on your own can’t be that bad, especially when you are focused on the bright future that your sacrifice and hard work are bound to yield.
