Guest Post: 3 Things to Consider When Hiring a Pet Sitter

T

his week my spouse and I are going to take a week to travel to Oklahoma City but we can’t take our dogs with us. So the question we had to ask ourselves was how were we going to make sure the dogs were okay when we were gone? Obviously we couldn’t leave them home alone because they would destroy the home, not get fed, and not get the attention they need. The alternatives came down to these scenarios: We could leave them with our parents, take them to a dog hotel, or hire a pet sitter. Our parents didn’t want anything to do with the dogs; the dog hotel wasn’t as affordable so we decided to hire a pet sitter. We choose someone we could trust, that would take the best care of the dogs, and there were some key things we made sure happened so that the pet sitter would be best prepared to care for our dogs.

1.  We made sure to pick someone we know
The last thing I wanted was for some stranger to care for our puppies while we were away. We chose a young and reliable friend that would live in our home for the week and take care of our pups. This person was someone we have known for ample time and we trust her with both our dogs and our home.

2.  We made sure the pet sitter was familiar with the dogs
Not only did we choose someone we knew but we also chose someone who knew our dogs. We didn’t want to take the dogs out of the environment they are so used to and we also didn’t want to bring someone in our home that they had never met before. I am not saying that your pet sitter has to be someone your dog knows and see on a regular basis, but it is helpful to have someone that the dogs have at least met before and have been around before.

3.  We made sure to equip our pet sitter
The last thing we wanted was for us to have a frantic call in the middle of the night from our pet sitter because they did not have the tools or resources to care for our dogs properly. We made sure they had all of the dog food. We made sure that they knew were emergency systems were. We made sure that our pet sitters knew the times in which our dogs eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. One of the reasons that I choose Smith Monitoring as my home security company was because they have a fantastic function that allows my pet sitter to set an alarm code that is different from the one that we normally use. Smith Monitoring offers home security systems and specializes in The Woodlands home security systems.

Whether you are leaving town for pleasure or business it is a very good idea to make sure you take your time choosing the right pet sitter for you and make sure you equip them with everything they need to do the job.
