New Book Review & Giveaway: SENTINEL – CITY OF DESTINY

I

f you like Christian allegories such as  The Chronicles of Narnia, Pilgrim’s Progress or  Hinds Feet on High Places, here is a new and fresh one called, Sentinel – City of Destiny, that you will want to add to your family’s reading list.  Though the author, Landel Bilbrey, suggests this book for boys ages 8 and up, I would read it with my family (children of all ages).  In the back of this book are questions for each chapter, allowing for great discussions.  I had one of my boys read this book, and answer the questions for their homeschooling.

This book is about a set of twin boys, each finding their path to the City of Destiny and finding true manhood.  They must each find four magical keys – courage, integrity, service, and vision.  They have to face the same everyday challenges our children do such as peer pressure, bullies, drugs, coveting, boy/girl relationships, music, movies, gambling, debt, etc.,

As a homeschool mom, I also love the vocabulary and geography lessons.  Throughout the book words of importance have an asterix by it which can be followed up in the glossary at the end.  At the beginning of the book is a two-paged map of the path these boys will follow.  At the end of the book are descriptions of the various places and the meanings of the cities, adding a lot more depth to the book.

Throughout the book, the author paraphrases verses, and references to the Scripture verse in a code referred to as   “Logos“.  An example of Proverbs 22:6 would be  ”Logos 20:22:6” (the twentieth book of the Bible, twenty-second chapter and sixth verse).  It’s a little difficult to quickly find the verse in the Bible, although for kids, it does get them to think, and have to count through the books of the Bible.  I might suggest, if you read this book or have it as a homeschool assignment, that as you come upon these “Logos” codes, to have children decipher the code, look up the verse and write it in a notebook.  As we should do with all Christian books we read or sermons and teachings from God’s Word, compare it to Scripture for truth and accuracy.  (II Timothy 2:15 & Acts 17:10-12 & I Thess. 5:21, 22)

So, with that in mind, I do recommend this book, Sentinel – City of Destiny,  for family reading and/or a wonderful homeschool assignment.  It was an honor to read this book, and share it with my family and now . . .  I have an author-signed copy to give away!  Here’s how you can participate in this drawing!

The giveaway for this book has ended.

  3. Hi! Thanks for stopping by my blog today, and for your encouraging comments. I’ve actually read this book already. I was asked by the author to do a review of it too. I loved it! It was captivating enough to keep me involved (I read a lot, so this is sometimes hard to do), and yet, it was easy enough to read for my son and my eldest daughter. I too loved the questions at the end of the book, for discussion time. Glad to see you’ve read it. You might try a book called Relic. It is a fantasy novel as well, with a strong biblical background. The only thing is it’s a series, and only the first two installments are out. I think you can find it on Shelfari, though. Blessings to you!

  4. I was trying to comment on your post on “vision” but I’m undoubtedly not on my toes this morning. I hope it doesn’t matter if I leave it here. O:-)

I wanted to say that I’m with you on disciplining our children. We let “little things” go for way too long and then we had to respond with a LOT of discipline. Our boys weren’t horrible, but we should be able to expect immediate obedience from them the FIRST time. (Don’t our dogs respond that way?) Surely we can expect that much from a child? Hehe… The Bible says…

    Proverbs 13:24 (New Living Translation)
24 Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children.
Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

All of that to say that we’re still “working” on them.. but at least NOW we’re doing it GOD’S way. =-)

  5. Hi Loni! Thank you for letting me know about your giveaway! I posted on my blog about the giveaway.
I hope all is well. :) I seem to be doing better from the morning sickness but now I am dealing some depression issues. :( Have you ever dealt with this during pregnancy? Boy it’s rough. Any suggestions? I did find out yesterday that we’re having a girl! :)
Anyhoo, thanks for stopping by my blog and I hope you have a wonderful week!

  8. Hello, I’m here to comment on IOW!

I agree children don’t have the wherewithal to commit to long-term vision. They need parents who are willing to coax and give gentle nudges to keep them moving in a positive direction.

PS I’ll pass on the book giveaway though it sounds wonderful.

  9. I just found your site through Deanne Crawford’s blog :) . I’d love to enter. Our family has a very new, baby-blog, and I posted about the contest and book here – http://quiverfullfamily.com/blog/?p=3, things are sort of rough over there, but coming along!
